How to Get Veinier Hands

If you’re a woman, chances are that as you get older, your veins become more visible on the back of your hands. But that’s not the only reason you might have veiny hands – they can also be caused by a number of different factors, some of which are downright dangerous and shouldn’t be ignored.

The main purpose of veins is to collect oxygen-poor blood from all over the body and carry it back to your heart so that your cells can receive all the nutrients they need. This is why your veins are called “veins” and not “arteries.” The arteries, on the other hand, carry oxygen-rich blood from the organs in your body to your heart.

Your skin’s natural elasticity and the fat layer beneath it can both affect how prominent your hand veins are. People who are very thin or have a high blood pressure often see their veins protrude more on the surface of their skin than others. Pregnancy can also cause your hand veins to appear more prominent, as your blood flow increases by 20 to 40 percent in order to supply enough oxygen and nutrients to the baby in your womb.

Heat can make your hand veins more visible as well, as the vascular system in the hands responds to heat by dilating and expanding the blood vessels. This can lead to the blue ropey appearance that many people notice in their hands when they’re hot. When you exercise, your blood pressure rises and this can also force the veins in your hands to push up against the skin.
