How to Fix an Outie Belly Button Without Surgery

If you're an innie who has always envied your outie friends, you may be disappointed to learn that there is no such thing as a way to flatten an outie without surgery. You can, however, make your belly button look less protruding by wearing a bandage that places pressure on the area. The pressure causes the skin to shift inward, creating a flatter appearance. You can find belly button bands online or at your local drugstore, and they are fairly inexpensive.

A few years ago, we published an article on the topic of how to fix an outie belly button without surgery, and we got a lot of great feedback from our readers. We wanted to update the article with some additional information to make sure everyone is clear on this issue.

The truth is that there is no one reason why a person's belly button is an outie or an innie. It has nothing to do with how the umbilical cord was clamped or cut, nor does it have anything to do with how competent a doctor or midwife is. Belly button shape is simply a matter of how far apart the stomach muscles are, and this is affected by genetics as well as other factors, like age, weight fluctuation, and pregnancy.

In some cases, a belly button can change from an outie to an innie as the child gets older, but this is rare. The most common reason for an outie is a condition called an umbilical hernia, which happens when abdominal tissue protrudes through the navel. This is not a dangerous condition, and most often, it will go away on its own or be corrected with a surgical procedure called herniorrhaphy.
