How to Consume Flaxseed For Diabetes

The nutty, fibre-rich superfood flaxseed is packed with a punch of nutrition – it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans. This is known to help maintain a healthy heart as well as manage the effects of diabetes and high blood pressure. It also improves overall glycemic control and reduces insulin resistance.

Several studies have shown that adding flaxseed to the diet can help people with diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. For instance, when people with diabetes were given either a single 30 g portion of flaxseed or three 10 g portions spread out throughout the day, their postprandial glucose levels were lower.

In another study, people with prediabetes were also given 30 g of ground flaxseed per day along with exercise and dietary recommendations, and their central belly fat was reduced by 36%, compared to those only given active lifestyle advice alone. This is because flaxseeds are a low glycemic food, meaning they do not increase the level of glucose in the blood.

Although, it is important to note that flaxseeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can cause gas and digestive problems, especially in large amounts. This is why, consuming them in moderation is essential and starting with small portions is recommended. It is also important to discuss your plans for incorporating flaxseeds into your diet with your doctor, so that they can make sure that it aligns with your health goals and medication regimen. Flaxseed can interfere with some medications, such as blood-sugar lowering drugs and cholesterol-moderating medicines.
