How Many Tablespoons in a Shot?

If you’re looking to pour a shot of your favorite spirit or cocktail, understanding how much of the liquid is in one shot glass is essential. Many bartenders use a jigger, a small tool with two different-sized cones that are joined at their tapered ends, to measure the amount of alcohol in a drink. However, if you don’t have a jigger, measuring spoons are another accurate option.

One fluid ounce equals two tablespoons, so a standard 1.5-ounce shot glass holds 3 tablespoons of liquid. This measurement can also be used to calculate other amounts of liquid in a recipe, including the milk in an iced coffee or the bourbon in a whiskey old fashioned. It can also be helpful when cooking, as some recipes call for small amounts of liquid ingredients that are difficult to measure with a measuring cup.

While some bartenders may prefer to use a jigger, it’s not always possible or convenient. A simple medicine cup is a good alternative, as the small plastic cups often have ounce and milliliter measurements printed next to the cup measurement markers. If you’re unsure how much a shot is, try using the four count method: pour until the liquid reaches the bottom of your first finger.

While measuring a shot with a spoon isn’t ideal, it’s still an accurate way to determine the exact amount of liquid in a shot glass. Just be sure to use a flatware spoon that has a wide rim, as these are more accurately sized than other spoons.
