Ashwagandha is a plant with adaptogenic properties that help the body cope with stress. It is an important herb in the Indian herbal system of Ayurveda. It is said to give a “natural boost to energy” and to support the adrenal system. It is also thought to be an antidepressant, helping to reduce depression and anxiety.
Ashwagandha may increase sperm count and motility in men, leading to improved fertility. In one study in 75 males with infertility issues, 5 g of ashwagandha per day increased sperm count and motility over 3 months. (2)
In addition to improving libido, ashwagandha may have antioxidant properties that help reduce free radical damage and improve brain function. It is believed to improve the symptoms of ADD and ADHD by increasing GABA levels in the brain. (3)
It is thought that ashwagandha can help lower blood sugar in people with and without diabetes. In a small study, it was found to decrease fasting glucose levels more than placebo after 30 days. (4)
