How Many Grains in an Ounce?

There are 437.5 grains in an ounce. A grain is the smallest classical English unit of mass and is approximately equal to the average amount of seed from a cereal such as wheat or barley. A common misconception is that the term “grain” refers to gunpowder, but when you see a box of ammunition marketed as 55-grain FMJ, it only references the projectile’s weight and not the actual amount of bullet powder.

The standard avoirdupois ounce, not to be confused with the troy ounce, is used in both imperial and U.S. customary units and is the most common unit of weight in many countries, but is not a part of the International System of Units. The word ounce is also used to describe the weight of gems, precious metals and other valuable goods.

Whole grains are important in a healthy diet because they provide a variety of nutrients, including fiber, B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin and niacin), iron and zinc. They also offer a good source of protein and are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates. Eating whole grains as part of a balanced diet may reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood cholesterol. Eating grain foods fortified with folate before and during pregnancy as part of an overall healthy diet may help prevent neural tube defects in newborns.

Our ounces to grains conversion chart and table helps you easily convert between the two measurements. The table lists a range of common ounce values alongside their corresponding grain equivalents for quick reference. Just enter a value in ounces, and the converter will automatically calculate the corresponding number of grains for you.
