How Many Calories Are in Water?

Water is essential to human life, making up up to 60% of the body’s composition. It regulates body temperature, transports nutrients, provides structure to cells and tissues and eliminates wastes. Getting enough fluids can prevent dehydration which may result in unclear thinking, mood changes and overheating. The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adults drink about 13 cups per day for men and 9 cups per day for women with amounts varying depending on age, activity level and climate.

Plain water has 0 calories and does not contain carbohydrates, fat or protein but it does have trace amounts of minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium and zinc. Carbonated water, fruit-infused water and protein water may contain varying amounts of calories. Check the label to find out the calorie content.

Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are all nutrients that can be broken down into the energy source for cells called ATP. Perfectly pure water – H2O – cannot be broken down into ATP and therefore has no calories.

The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adults consume a variety of beverages including flavored waters, tea and coffee in addition to plain water to meet their daily fluid needs. Getting enough fluids can prevent dehydration, which may lead to headaches, dizziness, constipation, nausea and overheating. Fluid intake is also important for health because it helps to protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, lubricate joints, suck up excess heat and eliminate waste.
