How Long is a Sinus Infection Contagious?

Sinus infections can be caused by a variety of factors, including bacteria, fungus or even a deviated septum, which affects mucus drainage. When a sinus infection is caused by bacteria, it can be contagious and may require antibiotics to clear up. However, if the infection is due to other reasons, such as allergies, a deviated septum or nasal polyps, it is not contagious.

Viruses, like those that cause colds, are highly contagious but don’t always lead to a sinus infection. This means that you can spread the viruses that cause sinusitis to others, but they may not develop the infection that results from these viral infections.

For people who have a sinus infection that is caused by bacteria, they can be contagious for seven to ten days. This is because the bacteria are not normally found in the human body, and they must be ingested through food or water for them to enter the sinuses.

It is important to practice good hygiene when you have a sinus infection. This includes washing your hands often and covering your sneezes or coughs. You should also avoid close contact with other people if you can. However, if you do need to be in close contact with other people, it is best to wear a face mask to prevent spreading any germs. You should also avoid sharing utensils, towels or personal items. Also, be sure to take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain relief.
