How Long Does Azo Take to Work?

AZO is a medication that is used to alleviate symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as burning urine and frequent urination. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in urine and by making it more acidic so that bacteria can’t thrive. It is available over the counter without a prescription. However, it does not cure the infection itself since it is only an anti-inflammatory and not an antibiotic.

How long does azo stay in your system? The duration that Azo remains in your body depends on several factors, including dosage, frequency of use and individual metabolism. It may take 24 to 48 hours for Azo to be completely eliminated from your body, depending on these variables.

For those with chronic UTIs, Azo is a convenient option for over-the-counter relief. It provides fast relief of pain, burning and urgency from the onset of these conditions, helping patients to feel more comfortable while they wait for an antibiotic to treat the infection.

Unlike most over-the-counter medications, AZO contains the active ingredient phenazopyridine hydrochloride, which helps to target the source of discomfort. It’s proven to go right where the pain is, unlike generic over-the-counter pain relievers that numb the whole body.

As with any medication, be sure to follow the instructions provided by your doctor. Ensure you don’t exceed the recommended dosage and consult your doctor before using Azo with other drugs, herbal remedies or supplements, particularly if you have a history of liver disease or G6PD enzyme deficiency. Lastly, it’s important to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
