How Do I Know If My Water Is Hard Or Soft?

When it comes to the quality of your water, hard or soft is an important distinction. There are many benefits to having soft water in your home, from better skin and hair to less build-up on appliances and dishes.

While you might notice a few signs of hard water in your home, like shampoo not lathering, the best way to know is by doing a simple test. The easiest test is to take a clear bottle of tap water and add some pure liquid soap to it. If the soap and water make a thick, fluffy mass of bubbles, then your water is soft. However, if the water looks cloudy or milky with no bubbles, then it is hard.

If you want to do a more accurate test, you can use a water hardness kit that can be purchased at most home improvement stores. These kits usually include paper test strips that you dip into your water, and they have a color chart that correlates the strip's color to the level of hardness in the water.

If you live in an urban area, it's also a good idea to check with your city to see what the hardness level is of the tap water. Your city should send out water quality reports (also known as consumer confidence reports) each year by July 1 that tell you what's in the water, including hardness levels.
