Float Meditation - A New Way to Meditate

float meditation

Meditation is one of the most popular forms of mental fitness and wellness, largely for its incredible benefits to the mind. It can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, improve sleep, and increase feelings of well-being.

The ability to relax and let go of thoughts is an essential component for successful meditation. It allows the mind to become still, so that it can observe the world around you without being influenced by your emotions or thoughts.

However, it can be difficult for beginners to achieve a state of deep relaxation in traditional meditation. This is where floatation therapy comes in handy: it takes away the distractions that can get in the way of a relaxed mind and body.

Floating in a sensory deprivation tank completely blocks out external stimuli such as temperature, sound, light and touch. This creates a deeply meditative dream-like state, similar to the state we enter just before we fall asleep.

It also induces a theta brainwave state, which is known to be a relaxing and healing state. A Zen Buddhist monk who meditated for a long time once said that an hour in the float tank induced the same calming, enlightening feeling he experienced when he sat in his monastery for hours on end.

Scientists are currently investigating float as a potential shortcut to meditation and have found that it can actually reduce stress in the brain just like prescription medications, meditation or even caffeine. In fact, Justin Feinstein, a neuroscientist at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and researcher at LIBR, has found that the activity of the brain’s neural networks was reduced by about 30% after just three float sessions.
