Does Tylenol Have Caffeine?

The main ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen, which is also found in many other over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers and cold remedies. Acetaminophen is a powerful painkiller and fever reducer that has been used for decades. It can be dangerous in large doses, causing liver failure and other serious side effects. It should not be taken with caffeine, which is a stimulant that can increase heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine is also found in coffee, tea and soft drinks.

Acetaminophen is in a class of medications called analgesics and antipyretic agents. It relieves pain and lowers fevers. Acetaminophen works by changing the way your body senses pain and by cooling down your body when you have a fever. It is often combined with other ingredients to make it work faster or to treat certain types of pain. Tylenol is available as tablets, caplets, capsules, liquid, rectal suppositories and chewable tablets. It is often added to cold and flu medicines to relieve sore throats, headaches and muscle aches. It is usually safe for use by children. Follow all directions on the label and ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

This medication can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you. This medication should not be given to a child younger than 2 years old unless instructed by your doctor. Acetaminophen may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby. Do not take this drug without a doctor's advice if you are breastfeeding or if you have severe liver disease.
