Developing Resilience Through Meditation

Resilience is one of the most important skills we can develop, especially in these uncertain times. Those who embody resilience are happier, healthier and more satisfied with their lives than those who don’t.

Mindfulness meditation is a powerful tool for developing resilience and other life-enhancing qualities. It helps to focus on the present and reduces stress-induced inflammatory responses that cause disease, and even weaken our immune system.

Chronic stress is linked to a number of chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Meditation is proven to reduce the production of stress-related neurohormones that increase insulin resistance, causing high blood pressure.

In addition, meditation reduces pain and improves sleep. People who practice mindfulness meditation consistently experience higher levels of circulating antibodies and T-cells that help the body quickly identify and fight illness.

Meditation also decreases the production of inflammatory compounds that flare up auto-immune diseases such as psoriasis, lupus and coeliac disease. This helps to keep chronic inflammation at bay, so your body’s natural defenses are stronger and less likely to flare up.

Research has also found that meditation can change the body on a genetic level, enabling our bodies to fight disease more effectively. A study in Harvard Medical School, for instance, showed that long-term practitioners of meditation have far more “disease-fighting genes” than those who don’t meditate regularly.

Using mindfulness to cultivate resilience can reduce anxiety, depression and other mental conditions that are a root of a lot of health problems. It also has the added benefit of helping to build self-compassion, a skill that can strengthen our overall sense of well-being.
