Can NMN Delay Aging?

Despite the hype, it's still unclear whether NMN can really delay aging. The supplement, also known as nicotinamide mononucleotide, has been shown to boost levels of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is crucial for cell function and metabolism. Several studies have found that increasing NAD+ extends the lifespan of yeast, worms, and mice. It has also been shown to reduce cellular senescence, the process by which a cell gets old and stops working as well.

NAD+ is produced in the body via two pathways. The first is called the de novo pathway, and it creates NAD+ from the very beginning, starting with a basic building block of protein. The second is the salvage pathway, which essentially recycles NAD+ by taking the products of a protein's degradation and putting them back into the production line.

While NMN has been shown to have positive effects in both animal and human studies, more research is needed before it can be considered a viable longevity strategy for humans. It's also important to note that NMN is not considered safe for long-term use and should be taken with a doctor's guidance.

One reason people who started taking nmn stopped was because of unpleasant side effects, such as stomach pain and diarrhea. These symptoms made them question the logic of investing so much time and money in something with so little tangible proof. It's also important to note that the FDA ruled in 2022 that NMN should not be sold as a dietary supplement due to its previous investigation as a drug.
