Can Dogs Have Pretzels?

Can Dogs Have Pretzels

It’s a common mistake to share treats like pretzels with your pup, thinking that a little snack will not do them any harm. But if you let your pup eat pretzels regularly, they will start to lose nutritional value and can even cause them health problems like dehydration or worse, salt poisoning.

The reason why pretzels aren’t good for dogs is because they contain a lot of salt, which is not suitable for canine diets and may lead to excess thirst. They also have a high amount of carbohydrates, which are not necessary for your dog’s diet and can cause weight gain and increase glucose levels in their bloodstream.

Aside from being too salty for canines, pretzels can contain a number of other ingredients that are dangerous to their health, including garlic and onion powder, as well as the chemical additive xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Some pretzel recipes may also use yeast, which is unsafe for dogs and can cause gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, gas, stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.

While it is unlikely that you will poison your dog by sharing a single pretzel with them, it’s still not a great idea to give them to them regularly. Instead, consider giving them some other human snacks that will enrich your dog’s diet rather than make it unhealthy and unbalanced. If you have any questions about your dog’s health, call a vet immediately.
