Can Chickens Eat Mangoes?

Chickens love a variety of foods, especially fruits and veggies. While many of these are safe for chickens in small quantities, others need to be carefully screened. Some aren’t even suitable for human consumption and can cause health issues for a backyard flock. One such treat that many people wonder about is mangoes; can chickens eat them?

The short answer is yes, chickens can eat mangoes. However, it’s important to make sure that the mangoes are completely ripe and properly prepared for the birds before feeding them. Also, since mangoes are extremely moist and sugary, they should be fed sparingly.

Ideally, the best way to feed a ripe mango to chickens is by cutting it up into small pieces and mixing it into their regular feed. This will prevent them from overindulging in the sweet treat and causing a spike in their blood sugar levels. In addition to promoting good digestive health, this will also ensure that the chickens get a healthy dose of the vitamin C, a nutrient that promotes good immune function.

The mango skin is also edible for chickens, though it may not taste good to them and some keepers prefer to remove it. However, it’s important to note that the mango pit and leaves are toxic for chickens. The leaves contain a substance called urushiol, which can cause contact dermatitis and other allergic reactions in chickens. Therefore, it’s important to remove the leaves from the mangoes before giving them to the chickens.
