4 Molds and How They Affect Your Mental Health

Mental health issues lead to an influx of people to hospitals. Usually, their cause is linked back to life experiences and daily stressors. Another common cause is chemical imbalances. But what about environmental factors? Sunlight can impact your health, but it isn’t as dangerous as mold. Mold can have a major impact on your mental health if left untreated. Here are 4 molds and how they affect your mental health.

Stachybotrys

Stachybotrys is one of the most dangerous molds found in a home. Black in appearance, it causes flu-like symptoms that can lead to severe respiratory damage if no intervention is done. Mental health is impacted as long-term exposure leads to headaches and memory loss. Children are at a higher risk with exposure as it can lead to delays in mental development. It is found in damp and dark areas in a home, and although it is typically black, it can also be grey and dark green. So be careful and on the lookout for this mold.

Chaetomium

Chaetomium mold is found in the home due to water damage. It grows on wet surfaces on baseboards, carpets, drywall, and on top of the wallpaper. Some of its symptoms to look out for are red, watery eyes. With repeated exposure, it leads to breathing difficulty and autoimmune diseases. Mentally, it leads to insomnia, anxiety, and feelings of depression.

Penicillium

Penicillium blue or green mold is found in most places, and its symptoms present themselves as asthmatic. When suffering from recurrent respiratory problems or bronchitis, call a specialist for mold removal as its locations are not as obvious as other molds. Removal should be immediate as it causes brain fog and confusion.

Alternaria

Alternaria is a common allergy-causing mold. It grows rapidly and is common in multiple climates. It grows hiding in small spaces, such as cables, cardboards, or on canvas. Since there are over 300 types of Alternaria mold in the world, take note of grainy green and blue molds. Symptoms to look out for are high fever and asthma. It causes a mental breakdown as it causes hypersensitivity, irritability, and confusion.

After removing mold from your home, have a good routine that includes a good diet, exercise, a sleep routine, and stress management to reverse the mental breakage experienced. Be aware of your surroundings and investigate any unpleasant musty smells indoors. Early detection of mold is important to help protect both mental and physical health.
