10 Tips for Avoiding a Root Canal

While root canal treatment is a lifesaver when an infected tooth threatens the health of your whole mouth, it’s still infinitely better to prevent infection in the first place. Here are 10 tips for avoiding a root canal and restoring your oral health in the process.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

The most straightforward way to avoid a root canal is to brush and floss daily. Make sure you brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time, including the tongue and gums. Flossing can help eliminate food that remains trapped between your teeth and feeds the root-damaging bacteria that cause decay. Also, avoid sticky or sugary foods. Sticky foods like candy, cookies and gum, as well as ice cubes and hard candies, remain on your teeth longer than smoother foods and feed the bacteria that attack tooth enamel.

Drink Plenty of Water

Your teeth need water to stay healthy and strong. Drinking water, especially tap water that contains fluoride, can reduce your risk of tooth decay.

Get Regular Dental Cleanings

Tooth decay requires regular cleanings to remove the lingering plaque between your teeth that can lead to cavities. Also, visiting the dentist for your regular exams can allow you to catch asymptomatic tooth damage that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Injuries like sports-related trauma and teeth grinding can result in damage to your dental pulp. Unless you replace the injured tooth with an artificial one, this damage can lead to painful infections in the roots and root of your teeth that require a root canal.
